The talks will be presented by Lazar Džamić, writer and new age philosopher, Aleksa Gordić, an IT guru working on the Serbian form of chat GPI, and Veljko Žižić, discussing the how, why and when of the Serbian dictionary. The Serbian language has lately been going through an aggressive forms of anglicisation, via direct and often meaningless import of English words. We will discuss what the future holds for the Serbian language, from several angles.

In September 2020, despite COVID-19, the British Embassy in Belgrade – with the support of the Serbian Ministry of Defence – opened a photographic exhibition in Belgrade telling the story of British involvement from both sides. The exhibition’s author, Colonel Nick Ilic, used a large number of previously unpublished images, reports and oral history accounts (held in the Imperial War Museum, the National Archives as well as the Serbian Military Archive) to bring this fascinating period of history to life. Instead of only lasting the planned 2 weeks – the exhibition toured Serbia for a further 12-months.

6pm Tesla talk by Avram Balabanović 2023 was the 80th anniversary of the death of Nikola Tesla (1856-1943). We associate Tesla with brilliant inventions such as the brushless induction motor, electrical power distribution systems based on multiphase alternating currents, fluorescent and neon lights, wireless communication, remote control and robotics (which he called ‘teleautomatics’). On 3 February 1892, Tesla gave a lecture entitled ‘Experiments with Alternate Currents of High Potential and High Frequency’ at the Royal Society in London.
7pm Concert by guitarist/composer Branco ‘Several of my CD albums and compositions have been dedicated to Tesla – along with the tunes and short talks I give about him at my recitals. Tesla’s inspiration was also the Sun. Indeed, the Sun whispered to Tesla how to create his Rotating Magnetic Field and AC motor. My Family and Other Enemies is part travelogue, part memoir that dives into the hinterland of Croatia. Mary Novakovich explores her ongoing relationship with the region of Lika in central Croatia, where her parents were born.
Shipped off to Lika as a child during the supposedly golden years of Tito to stay with relatives she barely knew, Novakovich has been revisiting Croatia ever since, researching the story of her family’s often harrowing life.

The British who defended Serbia during the Great War 1915-18
The British contribution to Serbia during the Great War was not limited to the (mostly) female medical missions. In February 1915 Rear Admiral Ernest Troubridge along with a number of sailors and Marine artillery men were sent to Serbia to defend Belgrade. The talk will tell the story of Admiral Troubridge and the exploits of the British sailors and gunners in the defence of Belgrade and during the Great Retreat over the Albanian mountains to the Adriatic. The talk will also highlight other notable British contributions that will be the theme of future talks.
