Collecting Coventry Exhibition
‘Beograd’ (1952) oil painting by Miodrag Bata Mihailović (1923-2011)
Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry CV1 5QP
Tuesday to Saturday 10am-4pm / Sunday 12-4pm
Free
After more than 50 years of being viewed by appointments only, the ‘Belgrade’ painting is back on a public view, as part of the Collecting Coventry Exhibition.
The painting was gifted to Coventry in 1953 by a visiting delegation from Belgrade and the Yugoslav Ambassador to the UK. This marked the first steps in forging a long lasting relationship between the two cities which later, in 1957, became twinned cities.
Mihailovic’s painting was included in the Modern Yugoslav Paintings Exhibition in 1957 at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. Later, in 1961, was part of the travelling exhibition of Yugoslav Contemporary Art and Sculpture in the UK, at Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, then visiting the Tate London, the Ferens Art Gallery in Kingston upon Hull and the Brighton Art Gallery.
In the 70s, the painting was back on display, as part of the Paintings Exhibition where Mihailovic shared his work with the works by LS Lowry, Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash and many other artists.
The painting depicts a Belgrade view in an abstract form.
